SWan Valley Outfitters - IDAHO - 5/19/22

Swan Valley Outfitters, a big game outfitting business with guaranteed allocated tags.

Swan Valley Outfitters is located in Swan Valley, Idaho. The area of operation is located within a portion of Region 6 of the Upper Snake Region in Unit 67 beginning at Hwy 31, between Swan Valley & Victor, ID and extending its hunting boundaries to the northwest within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. This vast area is home to all of Idaho’s big game animals, including elk, mule deer, moose, bear & mountain lion. The landscape is complete with deep canyons & rolling hills providing bedding areas, feeding areas and spring water to nourish its inhabitants. Summer opportunities include, horseback trips, incidental fishing & wagon rides. The permit also allows for additional use of horseback trips in the Pritchard Creek drainage in unit 66 and the ability to request for special use should your hunter draw a tag outside the designated unit of operation.

Swan Valley Outfitters currently holds a number of allocated tags for the Palisades Zone. “Allocated tags” mean a hunting tag that has been allocated by the fish & game commission pursuant to section 36-408(4) of the Idaho Code. The board uses average tag use history from the prior two years towards calculations.

Why is this important? Idaho non-resident tags are purchased over the counter and sell out within the first hour. There are 56 Palisades Zone non-resident A elk tags of which the outfitter has 10 allocated. There are 37 Palisades Zone non-resident B elk tags of which the outfitter has 12 allocated. And there are 77 Palisades Zone non-resident regular deer tags of which the outfitter has 10 allocated.

As the outfitter, this guarantees a full camp each season and without the fear of losing business to hunters that did not purchase their tags in a timely manner.

This turn key outfitting operation has two designated camps, upper & lower camp in the West Piney drainage. The camps will be sold complete with wall tents and wood burning stoves, cook tents with all of the equipment needed to cook for large groups, horses and mules with all of the tack required for riders and packing out game, 24ft gooseneck horse trailer and much more. There are 6 guides on staff, 2 cooks and 2 camp jacks. And a bunch of local volunteers ready to saddle up to put in and break down camp! This has truly always been a family run operation.

Severe bear predation has reduced the moose population resulting in closure of moose hunting to all but Alaska residents. We are also located in prime moose hunting units, and it is normal to guide 4-6 hunters in this area per year. The Elk herds have flourished here since the 60’s and 70’s. The Deer herds and Bighorn sheep herd has made North Park a coveted tag to apply for. With that said, Red Feather was established in 1984 starting with 2 guides and a couple of horses, and a 4 horse trailer.

Drunk Duck Lodge For Sale - Montana - 8/29/19

Introducing Drunk Duck Lodge. The lodge is currently being used as an income producing property and the majority of our guests are Sportsmen coming to stay during hunting season. The home is 4500 square feet with 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms a safe room, a game room and 24 feet peaked ceilings. The property includes a 3 acre duck pond, 300 yard shooting range, and 13 acres.

Montana is known as “The Last Best Place”. Well, Malta Montana in Phillips County is the best kept secret in the last best place. This little town on the “Highline” of Northeast Montana has more outdoor recreational opportunities than you can shake a walking stick at. Hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, motorsports, this place has it all, and without the crowds that you will find elsewhere in Montana. It is a true Outdoorsman’s Nirvana, and Drunk Duck lodge sits at the head of it all.

For the Hunter:
Big game of all sorts abounds. Drunk Duck Lodge is located 3 miles south of Malta. Mule deer are often found grazing on our lawn. Several B&C class mule deer are harvested in Phillips County every hunting season. There are always at least a couple of deer taken every year topping the magical 200 inch mark.

It is rumoured (not proven) that the largest mule deer buck ever taken in Phillips County was harvested in the ravine (locally know as a coulee) right behind the lodge. If Whitetails are more your speed. The property lies less than 2 miles (as the pheasant flies) from the famous Milk River and the giant whitetail bucks that are known to inhabit its cottonwood lined banks.

Of course, we are in Eastern Montana, so it goes without saying, pronghorn antelope are EVERYWHERE! You are likely to see so many antelope in a day that you may refer to it as antelope “shopping” as opposed to hunting. Trophy quality pronghorn bucks are the norm here.

When one thinks of Montana, and big game, the first thing to pop into one’s head is more often than not, elk, elk and elk. Drunk Duck Lodge is less than an hour drive to the elk hunting mecca that is the Missouri River Breaks. There are so many elk in “The Breaks” that they are spilling out onto the surrounding prairie, and can often be found wandering the wheat fields behind Drunk Duck lodge. The world famous “Slippery Ann” elk viewing area is almost exactly an hour from our doorstep. If you do one thing in your life as an outdoors enthusiast, go to Slippery Ann during September, and watch the elk. Any explanation will not do it justice. You MUST see it for yourself.

As if all that were not enough, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep are crawling all over the nearby (40 minute drive) Little Rockies mountain range, as well as the Missouri Breaks. If you are lucky enough to draw a tag, record book rams are taken in the area every year. There are so many bighorns in the Little Rockies that they are often seen walking through the streets of the nearby mining communities of Zortman and Landusky. Also in the Little Rockies are enough Mountain Lions to keep any Houndsman busy all winter. And although they cannot be hunted in this particular region, there is a very healthy population of Black Bear in the little Rockies as well. There have even been Moose cross the Drunk Duck property on occasion.

We are not all big game though. Waterfowl and Upland game bird hunting in the area is no less than spectacular. Waterfowl of every sort can be found migrating through the area. Ducks (both divers and dabblers), Geese (mostly big northern Canada geese, but snow and speckle belly geese can be found as well), and even Swans. Late in the season, when all the other water in the area has frozen over, warm water pockets in the nearby area hold hundreds of big northern Mallards and Goldeneye as well as Canada Geese. Only about 7 miles away lies Bowdoin Reservoir. A great place to fill you swan tag.

Upland wingshooting in the area gets fast and furious. Pheasant is usually the primary quarry, with Sharptail Grouse, and Hungarian Partridge limits often being filled as well. What catches every upland bird hunters attention around Phillips County is, it is one of the few places left to legally harvest Sage Grouse.

For the Fisherman:
Have you been looking for that magic combination of big fish, huge variety, and low pressure? Well, don’t tell too many people what I’m about to tell you (in true fisherman’s form). It’s here! There are 3 major fisheries in the area as well as dozens of smaller stocked lakes that receive little to no fishing pressure.

Let’s start at the top. Fort Peck reservoir, and the Missouri River. Fort Peck Reservoir has more coastline than the state of California (look it up). This is the largest lake you will ever see without hardly anyone on it. Why? Who knows, but the fishing shows. Big fish here are the norm, not the exception. Huge Walleye, Northern Pike, and Small Mouth Bass get the majority of the attention on Ft. Peck, but that is just the tip of the iceberg (so to speak). Chinook and Coho Salmon, Lake Trout, and Burbot all abound. There is also a legal Paddle fish season on the lake and in the river. And don’t tell anyone down South, but this is also one of the best Crappie fisheries you will ever encounter. No less than 7 different state records are currently held in these waters.

Next comes the much lesser known Nelson Reservoir. Nelson is quietly becoming one of the premier Northern Pike destinations in Montana. Nelson is also home to at least 4 state record catches itself. Along with Pike, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, and even some monster Channel Catfish are pulled from these waters. Very much overlooked in the area is the Milk River. Pike, Walleye and Catfish of trophy quality, and little to no fishing pressure make the Milk a place worth getting a line wet. Scattered throughout Phillips County are dozens of ponds stocked by the State of Montana, and the majority of these lakes see less than one fisherman per week. Largemouth Bass, Raninbow Trout, Bluegill as well as the Pike and Walleye standbys can be found in many of these ponds.

For the camper/Hiker:

Thousands upon thousands of acres of public lands are there just waiting to be explored. State of Montana and Bureau of Land Management properties make up a huge portion of the county. The Little Rockies mountain range has miles and miles of hiking and ATV/Motorcycle trail to be explored. Being a large portion of public land, you can camp practically anywhere in Phillips County and not have to worry about someone throwing up a tent right next to yours.

If outdoor adventure or just a quiet retreat is what you seek, than Drunk Duck Lodge is what you are looking for. Check out the Zillow listing for complete details.
